School bus driver instructor certification is required by chapter
392-144 WAC and overseen by OSPI. To become an authorized school bus driver instructor in Washington
state, qualified applicants must complete a two-week Instructor Training Course. Once certified, school bus driver instructors are required to complete annual Inservice Training.
When: Various dates in May and June
Where: Various locations throughout the state
About this course: Washington State school bus driver instructors are required to complete an annual inservice training class in order to maintain their authorization. These classes are offered in numerous locations across the state each spring. School bus driver instructors must verify continued compliance to chapter
392-144 WAC.
Course requirements: Must be a certified school bus driver instructor.
Register: Registration begins each year, the first of March, for the School Bus Driver Instructor Inservice course. Registration is through ESD 112:
- Go to ESD 112 Courses and sign in (or create a new account)
- Search courses by title; "School Bus Driver Instructor Inservice Class".
- Click on the desired course title to review.
- To register for a course, click "register" in the upper right corner and proceed to checkout. An email confirmation will be sent to you when you have successfully registered. In the event of any changes or cancellations, an email will be sent to you
at the email address you provided at log in.

- Due to the high demand for this course and varying
district needs, registration and timely submission of
supplemental materials is required. Acceptance into the course

regarding the status of your acceptance into the program as soon
as that determination has been made. In the event of course
changes or cancellations, an email will be sent to you at the
email address you provided at log in.
About this course: Qualified applicants must successfully complete this two-week training program to become an authorized school bus driver instructor in Washington state. With time spent in the classroom and behind the wheel of a school bus, participants receive training in all aspects of school bus driver training including writing and presenting lesson plans, effective classroom instruction, reference point driving instruction, and the rules and regulations of the Washington state pupil transportation industry.
Course Requirements: Participants must hold a Class A or B commercial driver’s license with passenger and school bus endorsement and air brake restriction removed, and also meet all minimum requirements for school bus drivers as prescribed in chapter 392-144 WAC. Applicants must also provide a school bus driver abstract of driving record. Participants in this course are required to have at least two years of experience of school bus driving.
