Teacher Certification

For Those Who Hold A Provisional Teaching Certificate

A provisional certificate (issued before 1987) enabled the holder to teach in recommended assignment areas. Expired provisional certificates may be converted to residency certificates.

If you DO NOT KNOW what kind of Washington certificate you hold, send an email with your full name (name used at the time of certification), date of birth, certificate number (if known), and social security number (optional) to cert@k12.wa.us

There are no longer any VALID PROVISIONAL CERTIFICATES

Since your PROVISIONAL certificate has EXPIRED you have the following options:

  • Convert to a Residency Certificate (see below)
  • Apply for a Substitute Certificate
  • Questions?

     

    Convert to a Residency Certificate


    • Must have qualified for an initial teaching certificate, a provisional teaching certificate, or a residency teacher certificate.
    • Must not have held a continuing or professional teacher certificate
