State Testing

Achievement Levels

Achievement level descriptors (ALDs) describe the knowledge, skills, and processes that students demonstrate on state tests in each performance level, at each tested grade level.

Smarter Balanced Assessments
Smarter Balanced assessments in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics are administered to students in grades 3-8 and high school. Smarter Balanced ALDs were developed by K-12 teachers and administrators and higher education faculty from the Smarter Balanced Governing States. The ALDs are aligned to the academic level colleges expect students to have when they arrive on campus.

Information on Achievement Levels, Achievement Level Setting, and the ALDs is available on the Smarter Balanced Achievement Levels webpage.

Mathematics End-of-Course Exams
End-of-course (EOC) exams in mathematics are administered to students through the Class of 2018 who are enrolled in Algebra 1/Integrated Mathematics and Geometry/Integrated Mathematics 2. The ALDs for the mathematics EOC exams were approved by committees of Washington state mathematics educators in July 2015.

Science Assessments
Measurements of Student Progress in science are administered to students in grades 5 and 8. The Biology EOC is administered to 10th graders. For these tests, ALDs are known as "Performance Level Descriptors (PLDs)." The PLDs were developed by committees of Washington state science educators during the standard setting process for each of the tests.
