Teacher Loan Forgiveness
Loan Forgiveness Programs are processed through the entity that holds your loan. For specific questions regarding eligibility for teacher loan forgiveness, you must contact your loan holder. OSPI does NOT process, approve or deny the loan forgiveness application.
OSPI is responsible for managing the list that is sent to the U.S. Department of Education. OSPI compiles a list of schools that are eligible for Title I and have a free and reduced lunch percentage of 30 percent or higher.
Find out if your school is on the
Perkins
and Stafford Loan Cancellation for Service in Low-Income Schools list for teacher loan forgiveness. Please remember to use the School District's name when filling in the "location" category. The search is by School District, not by city.
Once you have determined that your school is on the list for loan forgiveness, you can download the loan application from the Web site or request one from whoever holds your loan.
If your school has been omitted from the list and you think it should be on the list, based on the requirements (eligible for Title I and free and reduced lunch percentage of 30 or more), please contact Julie Chace and she will assist you with your questions.
You may also have a portion of your loan forgiven for teaching in an area of shortage. For Washington state, these are:
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Early Childhood Education
- Earth Science
- Mathematics
- Middle Level Math/Science
- Occupational Therapy
- Physical Therapy
- Physics
- School Nurse
- School Psychologist
- Science
- Special Education
- Speech and Language Pathologist
