Social Studies Graduation Requirements

All public high school students are required to meet statewide graduation requirements in order to earn a diploma. Revised Social Studies graduation requirements for the class of 2016 are now available. Currently 2.5 credits in Social Studies are required for graduation; however, recently the State Board of Education adopted revised graduation requirements affecting the class of 2016. This increases graduation requirements in Social Studies to 3.0 credits.

Current Social Studies Graduation Requirements
Applies to students who enter 9th grade before July 1, 2012, and graduate no later than the Class of 2015:
2.5 credits

New Social Studies Graduation Requirements
Applies to students who enter 9th grade on or after July 1, 2012, and graduate in the Class of 2016 and beyond:
3.0 credits
(per WAC 180-51-067: Section 4, a-d)

0.5 credit of WA State History and Government

Successful completion of WA State History and Government

  • Non-credit requirement
  • Successful completion will be noted on transcripts
1 credit of US History and Government 1 credit of US History
  US History Option 1: US History Option 2:**
  1 credit of US History

1 credit of US History addressing both the required US History standards and Civics standards (see RCW 28A.230.093) for more information)
**Includes embedded .5 Civics graduation requirement but only 1 credit is earned

1 credit of Contemporary World Problems (CWP) 1 credit of Contemporary World Problems (CWP)
  CWP Option 1: CWP Option 2:**
 

1 credit of Contemporary World History, Geography, and Problems (CWP)

1 credit of Contemporary World History, Geography, and Problems (CWP) addressing both the required CWP standards and Civics standards (see RCW 28A.230.093 for more information)
**Includes embedded .5 Civics graduation requirement but only 1 credit is earned

In accordance with the State Board of Education amended graduation requirements (WAC 180-51-067), the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction reviewed and revised the K-12 Social Studies Learning Standards and Recommended Scope and Sequence, aligning them with the amended requirements, including the 0.5 civics credit required for graduation.
