State Board of Education Election of Board Members
In 2016, one position on the State Board of Education is up for election this fall – Western Region Position 4 (four year term beginning the second Monday in January 2017).
Candidate Eligibility: Candidates must be a resident in the Western region (see below). The person elected to the State Board of Education may not concurrently serve as a member of the State Board of Education and as an employee of any school, college, university or other educational institution, or any educational service district superintendent’s office, or in the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, or as a member of the board of directors of either a public school district or a private school.
Western Region (counties): Clallam, Clark, Cowlitz, Grays Harbor, Island, Jefferson, King, Kitsap, Lewis, Mason, Pacific, Pierce, San
Juan, Skagit, Skamania, Snohomish, Thurston, Wahkiakum, and Whatcom.
Declaration of Candidacy: Forms shall be filed with the Office of
Superintendent of Public Instruction between September 10, 2016 and September
30, 2016. Declaration of Candidacy forms must be received at OSPI by 5:00 p.m.
on September 30, 2016. Please note that Declaration of Candidacy forms received
after September 30, 2016 will not be accepted. Mail Declaration of Candidacy
forms to Administrative Resource Services, OSPI, PO Box 47200, Olympia, WA
98504-7200 (faxed or emailed forms will not be accepted).
Electors (voters): Each school district director (school board member) in the
Western region is eligible to cast a vote for this position. Votes are weighted
based on student enrollment of the school director’s district. The electoral
vote (weighted vote) will be indicated on each ballot.
Voting: Ballots will be mailed to public school directors on November 9,
2016. Voting will be by mail and ballots must be postmarked on or before
November 30, 2016 in order to be counted. Ballots will be returned to
Administrative Resource Services, OSPI, PO Box 47200, Olympia, WA 98504-7200.

Candidates wishing to withdraw their candidacy must do so in writing by 5:00 p.m. on October 5, 2016. Written withdrawals must be submitted to OSPI – Administrative Resources.

OSPI to certify electors. (Certify electors and weighted vote for each region)
November 9, 2016 (on or before)
Ballots will be mailed to electors. Voting will be by mail and ballots must be postmarked on or before November 30, 2016.
