State Board of Education Election of Board Members

Candidate Eligibility: Candidates must be a resident in the region (see below) for which they are seeking election. The person elected to the State Board of Education may not concurrently serve as a member of the State Board of Education and as an employee of any school, college, university or other educational institution, or any educational service district superintendent’s office, or in the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, or as a member of the board of directors of either a public school district or a private school.

Eastern Region (counties): Adams, Asotin, Benton, Chelan, Columbia, Douglas, Ferry, Franklin, Garfield, Grant, Kittitas, Klickitat, Lincoln, Okanogan, Pend Oreille, Spokane, Stevens, Walla Walla, Whitman, and Yakima

Western Region (counties): Clallam, Clark, Cowlitz, Grays Harbor, Island, Jefferson, King, Kitsap, Lewis, Mason, Pacific, Pierce, San Juan, Skagit, Skamania, Snohomish, Thurston, Wahkiakum, and Whatcom.

Declaration of Candidacy: Forms shall be filed with the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. Filing forms will be available in August. The filing period is September 1 – 16. Mail Declaration of Candidacy forms to Administrative Resource Services, OSPI, PO Box 47200, Olympia, WA 98504-7200 (faxed or emailed forms will not be accepted).

Candidate Statement: Candidates may submit a candidate statement (up to 300 words) and a photo. The candidate statements and photos will be mailed to electors along with the ballots.

Electors (voters): Each school district director (school board member) in the Western region is eligible to cast a vote for this position. Votes are weighted based on student enrollment of the school director’s district. The electoral vote (weighted vote) will be indicated on each ballot.

Voting: Ballots will be mailed to public school district directors in October. Voting will be by mail. Ballots will be returned to Administrative Resource Services, OSPI, PO Box 47200, Olympia, WA 98504-7200.
