Common Core State Standards

Resources

A compelling argument for adoption of the Common Core State Standards is the extraordinary number of resources currently available and under development from the Common Core State Standards Initiative, participating states, and educational organizations and consortia. These lists of resources are intended to be informative but not exhaustive. We welcome suggestions for similarly useful materials to post on the site.

  • Washington’s public schools will begin the process of implementing the Common Core State Standards in mathematics and English language arts. What are these standards? Where did they come from? How do they compare with Washington’s existing standards? Keep reading for the answers to these and other questions.
  • From the National PTA Web site: “National PTA® partnered with experts on the Common Core State Standards to create grade by grade guides that reflect the standards adopted by more than 40 states. Individual guides were created for grades K-8 and two were created for grades 9-12 (one for English language arts/literacy and one for mathematics). Eleven (11) guides were created in all.” Download your copy of the Parents Guide to Student Success on the PTA Web site.
  • VIDEO: Sally Hampton and Phil Daro, Senior Fellows at America’s Choice (a curriculum development company), participated in the development of Common Core State Standards. Recommended: Sally Hampton answers the question, What are the goals of English Language Arts? Phil Daro explains, What does math college readiness mean? These videos and more are found on America's Choice Web site.   Note: The videos are short, but there is a time lag at the beginning of the video.
